What is therapeutic massage?
Therapeutic massage is massage with a clear purpose: to reduce muscle tension, improve mobility and ease pain. Unlike relaxation massage, it is aimed at a specific problem.
For the medical aspect, the course of treatment and precautions see the page Medical massage. We often combine massage with manual therapy or osteopathy.
Types of therapeutic massage with Dr. Verbitskiy
Therapeutic massage of the spine and neck
Targeted work on the muscles beside the spine, in the lower back, between the shoulder blades and in the neck. Suitable for tension after long sitting or physical work.
Myofascial massage
Hands-on release of fascia (the connective-tissue sheaths of the muscles), tight muscle areas and painful points.
Lymphatic drainage
Gentle manual massage with light, rhythmic movements that stimulates lymph flow. Used for a feeling of swelling, for example heavy or swollen legs.
Shiatsu
Japanese point massage: the therapist presses selected points along the body with fingers, palms and thumbs. It is intended for relaxation and balance.
Tuina
Traditional Chinese manual massage with rhythmic pushing and pulling movements. A relatively simple technique for muscle relaxation and better mobility.
Tibetan massage with warm pouches
First an ordinary massage is given, then the body is treated with warm pouches filled with salt or small stones. The warmth relaxes the muscles further. In Ayurveda a similar technique is known as Pinda Sveda. We offer it at the patient's request.
Therapeutic massage for the back, lower back, neck, shoulders and knees
Therapeutic massage treats muscles and soft tissue. For problems in a particular area we focus on it, but we always look at neighbouring areas too, because tension is often connected.
Back and spine massage
In spine massage we work mainly on the muscles and soft tissue beside the spine and around the shoulder blades, not on the vertebrae themselves. It can suit tension after long sitting, a feeling of tightness and pain between the shoulder blades.
Lower back massage
It targets the muscles of the lumbar region, beside the sacrum and in the buttocks. It can reduce the feeling of tension and make movement easier after sitting or physical work (low back pain). If pain radiates into the leg or tingling appears, a medical assessment is needed: massage does not remove the cause of a herniated disc or sciatica.
Neck and shoulder massage
Tension in the neck, the back of the head and the shoulders is common with computer work. The massage releases the neck and trapezius muscles and the muscles around the shoulder blades, with controlled pressure and no jerky neck movements (neck pain, shoulder pain). For sudden, severe or post-injury pain a medical examination is needed first.
Knee and leg massage
For knee problems we work on the thigh muscles, hamstrings and calves and on the soft tissue around the joint (knee pain). Massage is not a treatment for meniscus, ligament or cartilage damage. For a swollen, hot, red or acutely painful knee a medical examination is needed before massage.
Massage for desk work
Long sitting strains the neck, shoulders and lower back at the same time, so the massage often covers several areas. Afterwards we recommend stretching exercises and regular breaks (desk work and back pain).
Which massage should you choose?
- Pain in the back, lower back or neck: therapeutic massage of the spine and neck.
- Tense areas and painful points: myofascial massage.
- Feeling of heavy or swollen legs: lymphatic drainage.
- Relaxation and balance: shiatsu or tuina.
- Relaxation with extra warmth: massage with warm pouches.
If you are not sure, the examination and conversation will show the right choice.
How does the treatment go?
- Conversation and examination. We ask about your problems and how you feel and assess muscle tension.
- Massage. We choose the type of massage and adjust the intensity to how you feel.
- Recommendations. You receive stretching advice and we agree on further visits.
