Vertebrologist Maribor – one of the few vertebrologists in Slovenia

Vertebrology is a narrowly specialised branch of medicine focused exclusively on the diagnosis and treatment of the spine. Dr. Sergey Verbitskiy is one of the few vertebrologists in Slovenia, which gives his patients in Maribor access to highly specialised expertise on spinal function and disorders. A vertebrologist doctor is a specialist with medical training who focuses on the non-surgical treatment of the spine.

Vertebrology Maribor — one of the few vertebrologists in Slovenia

Author: Dr. Sergey Verbitskiy, specialist in manual therapy · Updated:

Vertebrology differs from general manual medicine and osteopathy in that it is narrowly focused exclusively on the spine - its structure, biomechanics and causes of dysfunction. Dr. Sergey Verbitskiy obtained this specialisation as a complement to his many years of expertise in manual medicine and osteopathy, enabling him a particularly deep insight into spinal problems often overlooked by general treatment.

Causes

What is vertebrology

Vertebrology treats the spine as a whole - from cervical to lumbar regions - with a precise understanding of how individual spinal segments affect one another and the rest of the musculoskeletal system. The field includes:

  • 🔹 Precise diagnosis of functional and structural spinal changes
  • 🔹 Understanding the biomechanics of individual cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal segments
  • 🔹 Recognising how an issue in one part of the spine affects other distant areas of the body
  • 🔹 Specialised manual techniques tailored to the specific spinal segment
  • 🔹 Long-term monitoring and prevention of degenerative spinal changes
Vertebrology and vertebroneurology

What a vertebrologist does and why this specialisation is valuable

What vertebrology and vertebroneurology mean

Vertebrology deals with the spine and everything connected with it: the vertebrae and discs, muscles and ligaments, and the nerves that leave the spine. It therefore sits at the crossroads of neurology, orthopaedics and manual medicine. In some countries the field is also called vertebroneurology, because it emphasises the nerve component of spinal problems.

Dr. Verbitskiy has completed postgraduate training in vertebroneurology several times and combines it with manual therapy and osteopathy. In practice this means that with spinal problems we look not only at the site of pain, but also at what is happening with the nerves, muscles and joints, and how the individual spinal segments influence each other.

How a vertebrologist trains and which methods they use

A vertebrologist trains for one thing only: non-surgical, conservative treatment of spinal diseases and problems. It is a narrow and rare specialisation in which treatment rests on a careful examination, not on surgery.

At work they use the methods this field requires:

  • manual therapy
  • massage
  • acupuncture and acupressure
  • special techniques taught specifically in vertebrology and vertebroneurology

The choice of methods depends on the cause of the problem, not on a single recipe.

What a vertebrologist does during examination and treatment

  • Posture and mobility assessment: we assess the individual spinal segments, muscle tone and joint movement.
  • Neurological part of the examination: we check sensation, strength and reflexes and how the pain is distributed, to tell whether it comes from a nerve root, muscles, joints or elsewhere.
  • Scans in clinical context: we consider X-rays or MRI together with your condition. A scan alone does not tell everything, since many people with disc herniations or wear-and-tear changes have no pain.
  • A non-surgical treatment plan: manual techniques, relaxation of muscles and fascia, joint mobilisation, acupuncture or acupressure where appropriate, and movement guidance.
  • Assessment and referral: if signs point to an emergency or the need for surgery, we refer you to the appropriate specialist.

What problems patients come with

Vertebrologist, surgeon, traumatologist and neurologist: how they complement each other

Each of these professionals has their own role, so the differences are best understood as a division of tasks, not as competition.

Surgeon (orthopaedic surgeon, neurosurgeon)

What they do: Operative treatment of the spine and joints.

When to see them: When, in a doctor’s judgement, surgery is necessary.

Traumatologist

What they do: Injuries, fractures, dislocations and acute care.

When to see them: After a fall, blow or accident with severe pain.

Neurologist

What they do: Diseases of the nervous system, neurological tests and treatment with medication.

When to see them: With unclear neurological signs, when diagnostics or medication are needed.

Vertebrologist

What they do: Non-surgical management of spinal problems at the crossroads of neurology and orthopaedics: functional examination and manual techniques.

When to see them: For recurring or long-lasting spinal pain that radiates into the arm or leg, without severe deficits.

Where to go first? A quick guide

  • After a fall, blow or accident, with severe pain or a suspected fracture: traumatologist or emergency room.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, rapidly progressing weakness in the legs, loss of sensation in the groin area: emergency room immediately.
  • Recurring or long-lasting pain in the lower back, neck or back that radiates into the leg or arm, without severe deficits: vertebrologist.
  • You need neurological tests or medication: neurologist.
  • You are deciding about surgery or a doctor has already suggested it: surgeon.

Many spinal problems, such as pain in the lower back or neck and disc herniations without severe deficits, are first managed without surgery. If there are signs that require surgery or emergency care, the right address is a surgeon or traumatologist; in such cases we refer you on.

Why the vertebrological view can be valuable

Pain in the leg, arm or head often originates in the spine, and the site of pain is not necessarily the site of the cause. When treatment targets the right source, results are generally more stable, and for long-lasting and recurring problems a broader view of the spine as a whole also helps. There are few such specialists in Slovenia: Dr. Verbitskiy is one of the few vertebrologists in Slovenia.

Symptoms

When to consult a vertebrologist

A visit to a vertebrologist is advisable especially when general treatment does not yield expected results or when the spinal problem is more complex and long-standing:

  • 🔹 Chronic spinal pain that recurs despite treatment
  • 🔹 Complex issues involving multiple spinal segments simultaneously
  • 🔹 Long-term consequences of previous spinal injuries or surgeries
  • 🔹 Unclear causes of pain not explained by a general examination
  • 🔹 Need for a second specialist opinion on an existing spinal diagnosis
How we help

How vertebrologic treatment is performed

The vertebrologic examination is thorough and precise, aiming to understand the spine as an interconnected mechanical system, not just the single site of pain.

Vertebrologic spinal examination

1. In-depth examination

Precise analysis of posture, mobility and biomechanics of all spinal segments.

Specialised spinal care

2. Specialised treatment

Targeted techniques tailored to the specific segment and cause of the problem.

Long-term spinal monitoring

3. Long-term follow-up

Regular check-ups for prevention and maintaining spinal health over time.

What patients come with

Spine problems we help with

People most often come to us with these problems:

  • 🔹 Lower back pain and sciatica
  • 🔹 Disc herniation and disc bulges
  • 🔹 Neck pain, headache and dizziness with neck problems
  • 🔹 Spinal curvature and scoliosis
  • 🔹 Pain between the shoulder blades and in the back
  • 🔹 Osteochondrosis and spinal wear
  • 🔹 Problems after a spine injury or long-lasting pain without a clear cause
When urgent help is needed

Signs that require immediate attention

As with any spinal treatment — seek urgent medical care immediately if you notice loss of bladder or bowel control, rapidly progressing muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the saddle area, or inability to walk. These signs require immediate specialist attention regardless of which spinal specialist you consult.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about vertebrology

Is a vertebrologist a doctor?

A vertebrologist is a doctor with medical training who has additionally specialised in spinal disorders. He is not a surgeon: the field is non-surgical (conservative) care, and for problems that need surgery or urgent help he advises seeing the appropriate specialist.

How does a vertebrologist train?

A vertebrologist trains for non-surgical (conservative) treatment of spinal diseases. It is a narrow and rare specialisation that combines knowledge of neurology, orthopaedics and manual medicine with special techniques of vertebroneurology.

Which methods does a vertebrologist use?

Manual therapy, massage, acupuncture and special techniques taught in vertebrology and vertebroneurology. The choice depends on the cause of the problem.

What is vertebroneurology?

Vertebroneurology sits at the crossroads of vertebrology and neurology and deals with the nerve-related signs of spinal problems, such as pain radiating into the leg or arm, tingling or muscle weakness. Dr. Verbitskiy has completed postgraduate training in this field several times.

What does a vertebrologist do at the first examination?

We discuss your complaints, examine posture, the mobility of individual spinal segments and muscle tension, check sensation, strength and reflexes, and consider any scans you have. Then we agree on the type of non-surgical treatment.

What is the difference between a vertebrologist and a surgeon or traumatologist?

A surgeon operates when surgery is necessary, a traumatologist treats injuries and fractures. A vertebrologist deals with non-surgical management of spinal problems. The specialists complement each other; if there are signs that require surgery or emergency care, we refer you to the appropriate specialist.

Can a herniated disc be treated without surgery?

For many disc herniations non-surgical treatment is the first choice, and a doctor decides on surgery based on your condition and scans. We do not promise a result. If you lose control of the bladder or bowel, have rapidly progressing weakness in the legs or loss of sensation in the groin area, urgent medical help is needed.

Does a vertebrologist take MRI and X-ray scans into account?

We consider scans together with your condition and the examination. On their own they do not tell how many problems you will have, since many people with wear-and-tear changes or disc herniations have no pain.

What exactly is a vertebrolog?

A vertebrolog is a specialist narrowly focused on the diagnosis and management of the spine, its biomechanics, and related disorders.

Why is Dr. Verbitskiy one of the few vertebrologists in Slovenia?

This is a rare, narrowly focused specialisation that Dr. Verbitskiy obtained in addition to his many years of expertise in manual medicine and osteopathy — in Slovenia this is a rare specialisation.

How does vertebrology differ from orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics treats the entire musculoskeletal system, often surgically, whereas vertebrology is narrowly focused on non-surgical, manual diagnosis and management of the spine.

Do I need a referral to see a vertebrologist?

No — you can book an appointment directly, without a referral, by phone or WhatsApp.

Who is vertebrologic treatment most suitable for?

Primarily for patients with complex, long-standing or unclear spinal problems where general treatment has not provided sufficient improvement.

Does vertebrology replace osteopathy or manual medicine?

No — it complements them. We often combine it with manual medicine and osteopathy for a comprehensive, in-depth approach to the spine.
