SCOLIOSIS
IN CHILDREN

While the spine is developing

Scoliosis is often discovered during the growth period. With Dr. Verbitskiy in Maribor, we support children and teenagers with gentle manual therapy and exercises, always in cooperation with the orthopaedist who monitors the curvature.

Scoliosis in children Maribor - posture assessment

Scoliosis is a sideways-curved and twisted spine that is most often discovered during the period of rapid growth in children and teenagers. Monitoring the curvature and deciding on a possible brace or other treatment is in the hands of the orthopaedist or another doctor. Manual therapy does not correct scoliosis, but as support it can reduce muscle tension and pain and improve mobility and posture.

Causes

What lies behind scoliosis in children

The causes are often unknown; what matters are:

  • 🔹 Idiopathic scoliosis, whose cause is unknown, usually during the growth period
  • 🔹 A family tendency to spinal curvature
  • 🔹 Unequal leg length or pelvic twist
  • 🔹 Prolonged monotonous sitting when studying and using a phone
  • 🔹 Uneven loading of the trunk muscles
  • 🔹 More rarely congenital or neurological changes identified by a doctor
Symptoms

What parents notice

Common signs are:

  • 🔹 Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades, one stands out more
  • 🔹 An uneven waistline or a tilted pelvis
  • 🔹 A rib hump that is visible when bending forward
  • 🔹 Fatigue or tension in the back after prolonged sitting
  • 🔹 Occasional pain in the back or between the shoulder blades
  • 🔹 Reduced mobility of the trunk

When urgent help is needed

Signs that require immediate attention

A doctor needs to see the child immediately if the curvature progresses quickly, if there is severe or night-time back pain, weakness, tingling or changes in walking and passing urine, fever or a marked deformity of the chest. These signs require an urgent medical assessment.

Scoliosis in a child requires regular monitoring by an orthopaedist or another doctor. Manual therapy is support and a complement, not a replacement for medical care, a brace or surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about scoliosis in children

Does manual therapy correct scoliosis?

It does not correct the curvature. As support it can reduce tension and improve mobility and posture; the doctor decides on the treatment.

Does my child need a brace?

The orthopaedist decides this based on the angle of the curvature and the remaining growth. Manual therapy does not oppose a brace; it can complement it.

From what age can I bring my child?

An examination is possible even for school-age children. We always adapt the treatment to the child's age and tolerance; parents are present throughout.

Are exercises enough?

Exercises and regular movement are an important part of support, but they do not replace the doctor's monitoring of the curvature.

Do a school bag or sitting cause scoliosis?

They do not cause it, but they can increase muscle tension. We recommend good posture and regular breaks when studying.

How many treatments do I need?

It depends on the child and the problems; it is usually a shorter programme with exercises at home and further monitoring by the doctor.
